Automated Storage System

Duxbury Projects have recently successfully completed the management of a £900k project for the design, manufacture and installation of an automated store for the storage and retrieval of painted vehicle bodies.

The Client was sourcing the vehicle bodies overseas and was therefore exposed to a risk of production disruption due to supplier manufacturer difficulties, or other difficulties with transport or the other logistical elements.

The store was therefore designed and implemented to maintain a buffer capacity to minimise the affect of such a problem occurring, allowing production to be maintained in the UK in the event of a delivery failure for whatever reason.

Working within an existing space envelope, the store used a single two-post crane, running on a central rail with double reach forks to maximise the storage density.

Duxbury Projects deliverables included;

  • Scheme preparation and the justification of the investment, based on cost of disruption to production and potential scheduling flexibility the system would allow.
  • Preparation of Invitation to Tender documentation, liaison with suppliers, concept evolution and assessment of tender submissions.
  • Technical levelling of supplier tenders, commercial negotiations and eventual preparation of the contract documents with the nominated contractor.
  • Management of the design, installation and commissioning including key component FAT and full system IAT.
